Platja de Can Comes is an open beach located in Castelló d'Empúries municipality in Alt Empordà comarca, northeastern Spain. The beach has a semi-natural environment and is situated between the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Reserve to the north and agricultural areas to the south. It receives permanent water input from the Fluvià and Sirvent watercourses and has low summer occupancy.

Mediterranean coastal waters belonging to water masses C7 (Roses-Castelló d'Empúries) and C8 (St Pere Pescador-Fluvià), classified as sandy shallow type with elevated continental influence. Beach length: 709 m. Average beach width: 87 m. Beach surface area: 47,864 m². Beach slope at water entry: very steep. Coastline evolution: −2.6 m/year. Sediment: medium sand (D50 = 0.37 mm). Mean salinity range: 19.6–38.6 psu. Water temperature: June 20.8 °C, July 23.3 °C, August 22.9 °C, September 21.6 °C. Significant wave height: 0.61 m. Mean wave period: 5.82 seconds. Predominant wind: east, weak intensity. Predominant sea state: rippled.

Location

Castelló d'Empúries municipality (11,653 inhabitants) in Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bordered by the protected zone of Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Reserve to the north and by the Fluvià river mouth to the south. The Almata camping facility is located near the beach.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control: weekly (Saturdays). Environmental control: minimum three weekly inspections. Monitoring period: 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control involves weekly analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes at least three weekly inspections assessing water transparency, coloration, floating human-origin solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Additional analytical controls are performed if toxic substances or hydrocarbons are detected.

Risks

The beach receives permanent freshwater discharge from the Fluvià and Sirvent rivers at the south end and from the Muga river at the north end (regulated access zone). A phytoplankton monitoring program is in place to detect and control potentially harmful microalgal blooms, which are monitored continuously during the bathing season. Most blooms form only colored patches and pose no risk to swimmers.
