Platja de la Gola is a long open beach located in Sant Pere Pescador municipality in Alt Empordà county, Catalonia, Spain. The beach stretches 2,500 metres with an average width of 82 metres, covering an area of 230,662 square metres. It is situated in a semi-natural agricultural environment with moderate occupancy. The beach is bounded to the north by the mouth of the Fluvià river and to the south by Platja de Sant Pere Pescador.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastline. The bathing zone belongs to water body C8 (St Pere Pescador-Fluvià), classified as a sandy shallow type with high continental influence. The beach receives significant and permanent freshwater input from the Fluvià river mouth and the Sirvent stream. Salinity range: 35.8–38.9 psu. Mean water temperature: June 20.7°C, July 23.2°C, August 22.8°C, September 21.7°C. Significant wave height 0.61 m with mean period 5.82 seconds. Predominant sea state: slight waves. Prevailing winds: east, light intensity.

Location

Sant Pere Pescador municipality (1,970 inhabitants) in Alt Empordà county, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is oriented east and is located in the Fluvià river basin. A camping facility is the only infrastructure in the immediate area.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing and minimum 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring includes analysis of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci on a weekly basis. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspection of water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation residues, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The bathing zone is part of the continuous monitoring and information programme for beach and coastal water quality in Catalonia.

Risks

The beach is subject to a phytoplankton bloom monitoring programme since 2000 to detect potentially toxic algae species. Natural phytoplankton proliferations are frequent in some beaches during summer but typically only form coloured patches without risk to swimmers. Freshwater input from the Fluvià river and Sirvent stream affects salinity and water quality. The area has low hydrological response velocity index to rainfall events.
