Playa de Ea is a beach located in the urban centre of the municipality of Ea, at the mouth of the Ea estuary in Bizkaia, Spain. The beach is 120 metres long with an area of 2,800 m² at high tide and 6,688 m² at low tide. It is situated inside a small bay that provides protection from winds and rough seas. The beach has fine sand composition and experiences significant tidal variation with a tidal range of 4.80 metres. Water renewal occurs within seven days or less.

Water

Coastal water body in the Matxitxako-Getaria water mass. The beach is 120 metres long with mean width of 130 metres. Surface area is 6,688 m² at low tide and 2,800 m² at high tide. Fine sand composition. Tidal range is 4.80 metres with minimum tide of 1 metre. Water conditions are calm. Water renewal period is seven days or less.

Location

Ea municipality, Bizkaia province, Spain. The beach is located in the urban centre at the mouth of the Ea estuary. Access for vehicles and pedestrians is good, though parking is problematic. Urban parking area is available.

Facilities

Two public toilets. Two lifeguards. One hondartzain (beach warden). Four showers and two fountains on sand bases. Nine waste bins. First aid kit. Medical equipment available by telephone. Wristbands for lost children. Children's play areas. Bicycle racks. Kiosk and bar. Urban parking area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2008-2010 was Excellent according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Approximately 2% of monitoring samples showed insufficient classification when compared to limit values (500 NMP/100 ml for E. coli and 185 NMP/100 ml for intestinal enterococci). Peribeach area hygiene-sanitary conditions classified as Good during 2008-2010 bathing season. The Matxitxako-Getaria water mass has Good Ecological Status and Complies with Chemical Status, with overall assessment of Very Good Status. No apparent impact and non-significant pressure identified for the water mass.

Risks

Probable presence of benthic microalgae with toxic capacity (Ostreopsis cf. siamensis and Prorocentrum lima), though cellular concentrations found in nearby Basque coastal beaches have been very low (20-100 cells per litre). Domestic animals are prohibited from access to the beach during bathing season.
