Ogeia is a 175-meter beach in the municipality of Ispaster, surrounded by cliffs and bounded by the Arakulu outcrop on the right and Errotia cove on the left. The beach features fine sand and pebbles, with a tidal range of 4.80 meters. It experiences moderate wave action with dangerous currents on both sides, making the central zone safest for swimming. The beach's sandy surface varies annually depending on currents, tides, and weather conditions.

Water

Coastal water body belonging to the Matxitxako-Getaria water mass. Length: 175 meters. Average width: 35 meters. Surface area at low tide: 13,125 square meters. Surface area at high tide: 5,250 square meters. Composition: fine sand and pebbles. Tidal amplitude: 4.80 meters. Minimum tide: 1 meter. Wave action: moderate. Water renewal time: 7 days or less.

Location

Located in Ispaster municipality, Bizkaia province, Spain. The beach has acceptable access for vehicular and pedestrian traffic. An urban parking area with 175 spaces is available.

Two public toilets. One shower base, one foot-washing base, and two fountains in sand area. Six waste bins. Two lifeguards. Two beach wardens (Hondartzainas). First aid kit. Medical equipment available by telephone. Identification bracelets for lost children. Picnic area. Bicycle parking. Kiosk/bar. Information panels.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2008-2010: EXCELLENT. Microbiological monitoring shows approximately 2% of samples classified as INSUFFICIENT when compared to limit values (500 NMP/100 ml for E. coli and 185 NMP/100 ml for intestinal enterococci). Beach area hygiene-sanitary conditions classified as IMPROVABLE in 2008 and GOOD in 2009 and 2010. The Matxitxako-Getaria water mass has low overall pressure with GOOD ecological status at station L-L10 and VERY GOOD at L-L20, both meeting chemical standards.

Risks

Dangerous currents on both sides of the beach. Probable presence of toxic benthic microalgae (Ostreopsis cf. siamensis and Prorocentrum lima), though cellular concentrations found in nearby beaches were low. Toxic microalgae presence requires monitoring but does not currently pose significant risk.
