Gaztetape is an urban beach located in the municipality of Getaria in the Matxitxako-Getaria coastal water body, situated southwest of Monte San Antón. The beach is 210 meters long with an average width of 65 meters and covers approximately 14,000 square meters. It is composed of sand and rock, confined by an artificial structure, and experiences high user occupancy throughout the summer. The beach offers comprehensive facilities and services with good road and pedestrian access and parking areas.

Water

Coastal water body in the Matxitxako-Getaria mass. Length 210 meters, average width 65 meters, average surface area 14,000 square meters. Composition: sand and rock. Tidal range 4.80 meters, minimum tide 1 meter. Wave action is moderate. Water renewal occurs within 7 days or less.

Location

Gaztetape is located in Getaria municipality, Gipuzkoa province, Spain, southwest of Monte San Antón. The beach has good road and pedestrian access with urban parking areas available.

Facilities

Lifeguards (socorristas), public toilets and lavatories, showers, trash cans and containers, first aid kit (botiquín), medical equipment accessible by telephone, information panels, ramps and stairs, motorboats (lanchas), security and surveillance, ambulance, children's lost bracelets, urban parking area.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2008-2010: EXCELENTE (excellent). Microbiological monitoring shows only 2% of samples fell below sufficiency thresholds (500 NMP/100 ml for E. coli and 185 NMP/100 ml for intestinal enterococci). Nearshore area hygiene-sanitary conditions classified as BUENA (good) in 2008 and 2010, MEJORABLE (improvable) in 2009. The Matxitxako-Getaria water mass has low overall pressure, good chemical status, and good ecological status at monitoring station L-U10.

Risks

Discharge from a shellfish processing company operates in the area, though no significant alterations in bathing water quality have been observed. Presence of Getaria port in the vicinity, with greater influence on nearby Malkorbe beach.
