Malkorbe is a 420-metre sandy beach located southeast of Monte San Antón in the municipality of Getaria, Gipuzkoa, Spain. The beach is 75 metres wide with a mean surface area of 32,000 square metres and is sheltered by artificial structures. It is an urban beach with calm waters suitable for swimming, influenced primarily by tidal currents. The beach experiences low weekday attendance but becomes heavily crowded on weekends throughout summer.

Water

Coastal water body in the Getaria-Higer water mass. Fine sandy beach, 420 metres long and 75 metres wide with a mean surface area of 32,000 square metres. Tidal range of 4.80 metres with minimum tide of 1 metre. Water renewal time equal to or less than 7 days. Low wave exposure with calm water conditions.

Location

Getaria municipality, Gipuzkoa province, Spain. The beach is situated southeast of Monte San Antón between Mazoparria and Altzoko-Arria headlands. Good vehicle and pedestrian access with urban parking areas are available.

Facilities

Lifeguards (socorristas), beach wardens (hondartzainas), information panels, public address system, public facilities including changing rooms, toilets, sinks, showers and water fountains in sand, disabled access with ramps and toilets, first aid kit, medical equipment accessible by telephone, umbrellas and sun shelter rentals, water sport rentals, marked swimming area, boat access area, beach sports area, kiosk, bar, café, restaurant, waste bins and containers, wristbands for lost children, ambulance.

Water Quality

According to 2006/7/CE Directive classification: 2008 rating was GOOD, 2009 and 2010 ratings were EXCELLENT. Only 2 percent of samples over the last 3 swimming seasons showed INSUFFICIENT quality based on E. coli (500 NMP/100 ml) and intestinal enterococci (185 NMP/100 ml) thresholds. Periplayera area hygiene-sanitary conditions classified as GOOD for 2008-2010 season. The Getaria-Higer coastal water mass has low overall pressure with GOOD ecological status and meets chemical status requirements.

Risks

Possible impact from port discharges and treatment plant malfunctions at the nearby Getaria sewage treatment facility. Potential influence from frozen food company discharges in the vicinity. Domestic animals are prohibited from the beach during the bathing season.
