Platja de l'Alguer is a well-defined urban beach located within the town of L'Ametlla de Mar in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded by two breakwaters on either side and has high summer occupancy. It features fine sand with an average width of 18 metres and a strong water entry slope. The beach is situated near the municipal sports and fishing port.

Mediterranean Sea. The beach is part of water body C32 (L'Ametlla de Mar-Conca Catalana de l'Ebre), classified as a sandy, shallow type with moderate continental influence. Beach surface area: 3,069 m². Average width: 18 metres. Length: 160 metres. Sediment: fine sand (D50 = 0.24 mm). Coastal evolution: -0.7 m per year. Water temperature ranges from 22.3°C in June to 25.7°C in July and August, declining to 24.6°C in September. Salinity range: 33.6–38.5 psu. Significant wave height: 81 cm. Mean wave period: 5.24 seconds.

Location

L'Ametlla de Mar, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located within the town of L'Ametlla de Mar (population 7,592). It is positioned on the southeastern coast adjacent to the local sports and fishing port.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks during this period.

Water Quality

The beach is monitored under the Bathing Water Quality Surveillance Programme according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring is conducted weekly for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly, assessing water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. No surface water input reaches the bathing zone or its immediate vicinity. The area has a low hydrological response velocity index.

Risks

Phytoplankton blooms are monitored as part of the Phytoplankton Proliferation Control Programme. Most blooms form only coloured patches and pose no risk to swimmers. Toxic species are managed through established protocols if detected. General monitoring includes surveillance for hydrocarbons and other harmful substances.
