Playa del Altet is a natural sandy beach located in the municipality of Elche in Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain. It has a longitudinal open configuration without defensive structures or promenade. The beach is bounded to the north by Playa del Saladar and to the south by Playa de Arenales del Sol. It is situated on low-accumulation coastal terrain within a dune and sandy area.

Water

Maritime bathing zone in the Júcar hydrographic demarcation. The beach has a high-tide shoreline length of 1,665.1 metres and an average width of 42.6 metres. The seabed is sandy. Current direction is south to north. The water body is classified as low-tidal range (microtidal). The coastal mass of water is categorized as coastal with a poor ecological status.

Location

Elche, Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain. The beach is accessible by foot and vehicle, with parking available. Access for people with disabilities is provided.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is monitored weekly during the bathing season. The bathing zone is managed according to Royal Decree 1341/2007, which transposes Directive 2006/7/CE. No direct discharges affecting water quality occur at the shoreline. The wastewater treatment plant serving the area is EDAR Elche–Arenales with a design capacity of 6,666 m³/day and a 2020 flow rate of 3,230 m³/day serving 21,969 people. Treatment includes tertiary treatment plus ultraviolet disinfection with high removal efficiencies for suspended solids (98%), biochemical oxygen demand (98%), and chemical oxygen demand (97%).

Risks

Rainfall is the primary risk factor with low frequency and mild impact. Urban sanitation and direct shoreline discharges pose low-frequency risks with mild impact. Rivers and canals, industrial installations, port facilities, and diffuse contamination all present low-frequency risks with mild impact. The area has low risk of cyanobacteria proliferation as this phenomenon is associated with confined freshwater with high nutrient content, not typical of coastal waters.
