Platja de l'Estany-Mas Mel is an open beach in Calafell, Tarragona, situated in a semi-urban environment. The beach has an average width of 49 metres and a length of 1,400 metres, with a total surface area of 67,751 square metres. The beach has medium occupancy levels during summer and is separated from Platja de Calafell by the Riera de l'Estany stream to the south.

Water

The bathing water belongs to water body C25 (Cubelles-Altafulla), classified as a sandy shallow type with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 34.9 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 22°C, July 25.5°C, August 26°C, September 24.8°C. The beach has medium sand sediment (D50 = 0.27 mm) with a very steep water entry gradient. Significant wave height averages 74 cm with a mean period of 6 seconds.

Location

The beach is located in Calafell, a municipality of 24,265 inhabitants in the Baix Penedès comarca, Tarragona Province, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the Mediterranean coast with a semi-urban setting.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring conducted for 17 consecutive weeks during the bathing season, with weekly microbiological sampling and minimum 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of 3 times weekly. The beach belongs to the Rieres de Calafell-Torredembarra water basin, served by the Calafell wastewater treatment system (EDAR) with biological treatment and two submarine outfalls.

Risks

The beach has a high hydrological response velocity index. Three watercourse outlets affect the bathing area: Estany Llarg (directly adjacent, flows intermittently during heavy rain), Torrent de la Casa Vella de Segur, and Torrent de la Casa Nova de Segur (both typically do not reach the sea except during heavy rainfall). Coastal evolution shows erosion at a rate of 2.99 metres per year.
