Platja de Cunit Ponent is a beach located in Cunit, a municipality in the Baix Penedès comarca of Tarragona, Catalonia. The beach consists of successive semicircular coves separated by breakwaters and is situated in a residential environment outside the urban center, bordered to the west by Calafell. It has a fine sand composition with an average grain size of 0.18 mm and experiences high occupancy during summer months. The beach spans 1,500 metres in length with an average width of 50 metres.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water body C25 (Cubelles-Altafulla), classified as sandy shallow water with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 35.8 to 38.4 psu. Average water temperatures: June 22.0 °C, July 26.0 °C, August 26.3 °C, September 24.9 °C. Significant wave height averages 74 cm with a mean period of 6 seconds. Prevailing winds are from the southwest at weak intensity. The coastal area has a high Hydrological Response Velocity Index.

Location

Cunit, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in a residential area outside the urban nucleus, bordering Calafell to the west. The municipality of Cunit has 12,326 inhabitants.

June to September.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) from June to September each year. Monitoring includes microbiological analysis of fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci. Water quality is classified as Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient based on four-year analytical data. Bi-weekly monitoring occurs at an official sampling point. Water quality results are published on the ACA website and through the PlatgesCat mobile application.

Risks

The beach receives water discharge from two stormwater collectors: the Torrent de la Creueta discharges through the Amílcar Barca street stormwater collector, and another collector at Vendrell street drains water from the lower part of the municipality. The Cubelles-Cunit wastewater treatment system serves the area with a main submarine outfall and an emergency outfall located at the northern end of the beach. The coastal area has a high hydrological response index during rainfall episodes.
