Platja de la Móra is a sandy beach located in Tarragona, Spain, within the natural protected area of Tamarit-Punta de la Móra. The beach measures 450 metres long with an average width of 50 metres and a total surface area of 23,032 square metres. It features fine sand sediment and is naturally bounded by rocks on both sides, with the Riera de la Móra stream discharging near the centre of the beach. The beach experiences moderate occupation during summer months and is situated in a semi-urban natural and residential environment.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal beach. Average width 50 metres, length 450 metres, surface area 23,032 square metres. Fine sand sediment with medium grain size of 0.2 mm. Moderate water entry gradient. Average water temperatures: June 21.6°C, July 25.1°C, August 25.9°C, September 24.6°C. Average salinity 35.5–38.5 psu. Significant wave height 74 cm with mean period of 6 seconds. Coastal hydrodynamic velocity response index is high. Low continental influence.

Location

Tarragona municipality, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in the Tarragonès comarca within the natural protected area of Tamarit-Punta de la Móra.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring is weekly; environmental inspections occur minimum three times weekly during the 17-week consecutive monitoring period.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly during bathing season according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections assess transparency, colouration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant matter, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons and jellyfish presence. The beach belongs to water body C26 (Tarragona Nord) classified as shallow sandy type with low continental influence.

Risks

Riera de la Móra stream normally does not reach the sea but discharges into the bathing zone during heavy rainfall periods. The bathing area is monitored for phytoplankton proliferation, algal blooms, and presence of harmful substances including hydrocarbons.
