Tamarit Beach is a semi-enclosed sandy beach located in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, stretching 1,150 metres in length with an average width of 62 metres. The beach features fine sand and a steep water entry slope, situated in a largely natural setting near the mouth of the Gaià River, bordered by the Tamarit Castle and natural reserve to the south and open to Altafulla Beach to the north. The beach experiences medium summer occupation and is part of the Mediterranean coastal water bodies C25 and C26.

Mediterranean Sea. Semi-enclosed sandy beach with fine sediment (D50 grain size = 0.25 mm). Length: 1,150 metres. Average width: 62 metres. Surface area: 64,833 km². Steep water entry slope. Coastal orientation: SSE. Water temperature: June 21.7°C, July 25.1°C, August 25.8°C, September 24.5°C. Salinity range: 35.4–38.3 psu. Significant wave height: 74 cm; mean period: 6 seconds. Predominant sea state: rippled. Low continental influence.

Location

Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 140,323 inhabitants. The beach is located between Altafulla Beach to the north and the Tamarit Castle and Tamarit-Punta de la Móra natural reserve to the south. A campsite is situated nearby.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control conducted weekly (Saturdays) for 17 consecutive weeks during the swimming season. Environmental inspections conducted minimum 3 times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring includes Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci indicators. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of water transparency, colour, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Altafulla wastewater treatment system (EDAR Altafulla) treats 9,619 residents and equivalent population of 34,550 inhabitants, using biological treatment with a discharge capacity of 8,292 m³/day via a principal submarine outfall and three emergency outfalls.

Risks

The Gaià River is the primary freshwater input and normally flows only behind the beach, but during heavy rainfall directly affects bathing waters. The river mouth is not channelized. La Rasa, a freshwater source 700 metres north of the beach, discharges into the sea during heavy rainfall or due to anthropogenic causes. The area has a high Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH), indicating rapid water response to rainfall events.
