Platja de la Martinenca is a triangular bathing beach in Alcanar, Tarragona, located directly in front of a cement factory. The beach is bounded to the east by the main pier of the factory port and to the west by rocks separating it from Platja Maricel. The beach has an average width of 100 metres and a length of 150 metres, with fine sand sediment. Summer occupancy levels are high.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water body C35 (Alcanar), classified as shallow sandy type with moderate continental influence. Average water temperature ranges from 23.4°C in June to 26.8°C in July and August. Salinity ranges from 33.7 to 37.9 psu. Significant wave height averages 81 cm with a mean period of 5.24 seconds. General circulation follows a cyclonic pattern with currents parallel to the continental coast and a north-eastward current off the Balearics.

Location

Alcanar municipality, Tarragona Province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated on the Mediterranean coast in the Montsià region, directly adjacent to a cement factory.

Season

1st week of June to 3rd week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly for 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring includes minimum three weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Microbiological control conducted weekly during the bathing season, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes minimum three weekly inspections assessing water transparency, colouration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is served by two wastewater treatment plants: EDAR Alcanar (biological treatment with lagoons, discharging to the Sénia River) serving 9,000 population equivalents, and EDAR Cases d'Alcanar (biological treatment with ultraviolet disinfection, maximum capacity 1,569 m³/day) serving the coastal area and discharging via Barranc de Doña Manuela to the sea north of the factory port.

Risks

Barranc del Moltó reaches the bathing zone but does not discharge to sea even during heavy rainfall. The area has low hydrological response velocity (VRH index), indicating slow water response to precipitation events.
