Platja del Maricel is a semi-urban beach in Alcanar, Tarragona, located in the Montsià region of Catalonia, Spain. The beach is approximately 360 meters long with an average width of 26 meters, backed by a secondary road (N-340) and bordered by rocky outcrops. The summer occupancy level is moderate. The beach features gravel sediment with a steep water entry slope and experiences a coastal erosion rate of -0.075 meters per year.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water mass C35 (Alcanar), classified as a sandy shallow mass with moderate continental influence. Water temperatures: June 23.1°C, July 26.5°C, August 26.7°C, September 25.3°C. Mean salinity range: 32.5–37.8 psu. Mean wave height 81 cm with a period of 5.24 seconds, predominantly from the east. Prevailing winds are northwest with weak intensity. The coastal circulation is cyclonic with a current parallel to the coast.

Location

Alcanar municipality (10,570 inhabitants) in the Montsià region of Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated on the Catalan coast facing the Mediterranean Sea. The road N-340 is located directly behind the beach.

Season

1st week of June to 3rd week of September. Monitoring includes 17 consecutive weeks of control with weekly microbiological analysis (every Saturday) and minimum 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring is performed weekly for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections occur at least 3 times weekly, assessing transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial debris, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. No freshwater inputs affect the beach. The area is served by wastewater treatment plants (EDAR Alcanar and EDAR Cases d'Alcanar) with secondary and UV treatment, discharging to the Sénia river or Barranc de Doña Manuela.

Risks

Phytoplankton blooms are monitored as a natural phenomenon that may form colored patches in water but typically pose no risk to swimmers. Hydrocarbon contamination is monitored and controlled through regular inspections. The beach is subject to macroalgae community surveillance.
