Platja de la Murtra-la Pineda is an open sandy beach located in the natural area of the Llobregat Delta in Viladecans, Barcelona. The beach is 1,470 metres long with an average width of 80 metres and a surface area of 117,600 square metres. It has moderate water entry gradient and medium-grained sand sediment. The beach is situated in a coastal zone near the mouth of the Llobregat River and Barcelona Airport, with low occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water mass (C22 El Prat de Llobregat-Castelldefels), sandy shallow type with moderate continental influence. Average salinity range 25.45–38.4 psu. Water temperature: June 20.9°C, July 24.6°C, August 25.5°C, September 24.1°C. Predominant sea state: rippled waves. Significant wave height 0.74 m, average period 6 seconds, most frequent direction SSW. Cyclonic general circulation with parallel coastal current and northeastern current toward the Balearic Islands.

Location

Viladecans municipality, Barcelona Province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bordered by Platja de Cal Francès to the northeast and Platja de l'Estany to the southwest, separated by the Murtra canal. For more information and facilities, consult the Viladecans municipal website.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored biweekly from June to September by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to Directive 2006/7/CE and Royal Decree 1341/2007. Monitoring includes analysis of fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Annual classification uses four categories: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, Insufficient, based on statistical treatment of analytical results from the last four bathing seasons. Results are published on PlatgesCat application and communicated to coastal municipalities.

Risks

The Remolar pond, Sant Climent stream, and Murtra canal are the main freshwater sources that discharge near the bathing zone, particularly during rainfall. The area is classified as having a high hydrological response velocity index. Temporary water quality affections may occur during rainfall episodes or occasional sewage incidents.
