Platja del Remolar - Pineda de Cal Francès is an open beach located in the Llobregat Delta natural area near Viladecans, Barcelona. The beach has an average width of 60 metres and a length of 1,220 metres with a total surface area of 73,200 square metres. It is situated in a semi-urban environment with moderate continental influence, characterized by moderate sand grain size and moderate water entry gradient. The beach has low summer occupancy and is bordered by the Remolar pond to the northeast and the Murtra canal to the southwest.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. Average width 60 metres, length 1,220 metres, surface area 73,200 square metres. Medium sand sediment with mean grain size of 0.26 mm. Moderate water entry gradient. Coastline evolution of 0.6 metres per year. Water body classification C22 El Prat de Llobregat-Castelldefels: sandy shallow type with moderate continental influence. Mean salinity range 25.45–38.4 practical salinity units. Significant wave height 0.74 metres with mean period of 6 seconds.

Location

Viladecans, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in the Baix Llobregat region near the mouth of the Llobregat River and Barcelona Airport. Coordinates of the monitoring point are UTM X:421807; Y:4569676.

Season

June to September.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored biweekly by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) from June to September using microbiological analysis of fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Quality classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing) and Insufficient (not suitable for bathing) on a temporary basis, and Excellent, Good, Sufficient and Insufficient on an annual basis using data from the four preceding years. Temporary water quality warnings are issued during rainfall episodes or occasional sanitation incidents.

Risks

The beach is subject to high hydrological response velocity during rainfall events. The Remolar pond, Sant Climent watercourse and Murtra canal are the principal sources of freshwater inflow, particularly during rainfall conditions. Occasional water quality affection due to rainfall episodes or sanitation incidents may occur.
