Platja de la Pineda is an open beach located in Castelldefels, Barcelona, in a semi-urban environment along the Mediterranean coast. The beach has an average width of 111 metres, a length of 2,049 metres, and a total surface area of 227,439 square metres. It features fine sand with a strong water entry slope and experiences high summer occupancy. The beach is bordered by Gavà beach to the northeast and Lluminetes beach to the southwest.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water body. The beach is oriented south and belongs to water mass C22 (El Prat de Llobregat–Castelldefels), classified as sandy shallow water with moderate continental influence. Average water temperatures range from 21.2°C in June to 25.7°C in August. Mean salinity ranges from 37.1 to 38.5 psu. Average wave height is 0.74 metres with a mean period of 6 seconds. Predominant winds are weak southwesterly; predominant sea state is slight swell.

Location

Castelldefels, Barcelona, in the Baix Llobregat region of Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated on the Mediterranean coast between Gavà beach and Lluminetes beach. Further information about the beach and its facilities is available at the municipal website.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored biweekly from June to September by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) under EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological quality is assessed through analysis of fecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Quality is classified into temporary categories (Excellent, Good, or Insufficient) and annual categories (Excellent, Good, Sufficient, or Insufficient) based on analytical data from the preceding four years. Temporary water quality advisories are issued in cases of rainfall episodes or sewage incidents.

Risks

The Castelldefels coastline has several surface water drainage points distributed along the beach that typically do not reach the sea, but during heavy rainfall events they discharge freshwater into bathing areas. The beach is situated in a coastal zone with a high hydrological response velocity index, making it susceptible to hydrological fluctuations during rain episodes.
