Platja de la Pineda is a sandy beach in the municipality of Vila-seca in Tarragona, Catalonia, located in an urban-residential environment. The beach is 2,450 metres long with an average width of 38 metres, composed of fine sand with a strong water entry slope. The beach has high summer occupancy levels and is notable for its proximity to the Port of Tarragona and numerous nearby chemical industries.

Sandy beach (encaixada type) in the Mediterranean Sea, part of water body C27 (Tarragona-Vila-seca). Surface area 120,651 square metres, length 2,450 metres, average width 38 metres. Fine sand sediment (D50 = 0.22 mm). Water temperature ranges from 21.6°C in June to 25.5°C in August. Salinity range 36.1–38.3 psu. Significant wave height 74 cm with 6-second average period. Low hydrological response index to heavy rainfall events.

Location

Vila-seca municipality in the Tarragonès comarca, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is in an urban environment bounded on the left by a breakwater and opening to Platja del Racó on the right. Nearest city is Tarragona.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing (Saturdays) and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. The beach belongs to water body C27 classified as sandy, shallow, with moderate continental influence. Riera de Prats discharges into the bathing zone during heavy rainfall approximately 100 metres north of the beach limit.

Risks

Riera de Prats can discharge into the bathing zone during heavy rainfall events. General ocean circulation patterns include parallel coastal currents and north-easterly currents. The beach is influenced by the proximity of industrial chemical facilities and the Port of Tarragona.
