Cala Crancs is a small U-shaped cove in Salou, Tarragona, delimited naturally by rocks on both sides and situated in the residential area of Cap Salou. The beach has a medium occupancy level during summer. It covers an area of 2,441 square meters with an average width of 25 meters and a length of 90 meters.

Water

Mediterranean Sea, sandy beach type. Average width 25 meters, length 90 meters, surface area 2,441 square meters. Medium sand sediment with D50 grain size of 0.28 mm. Moderate gradient at water entry. Coastline evolution of -0.87 meters per year. Water salinity ranges 36.6–38.4 psu. Mean water temperature: June 21.7°C, July 25.3°C, August 25.9°C, September 24.6°C. Significant wave height 81 cm, mean period 5.24 seconds, most frequent direction east. Predominant sea state is rippled. Prevailing winds are southeast and weak. Low hydrological response index.

Location

Salou municipality in the Tarragonès region, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. Located in the residential environment of Cap Salou.

Facilities

17 qualified inspectors conduct weekly water sample collection and visual inspections. Aerial and boat resources available for beach and coastal water quality prevention and improvement.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control conducted weekly for 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections conducted at least 3 times per week.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored weekly for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental parameters assessed include water transparency, color, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The bathing area receives no permanent or temporary surface water input, only runoff during rainfall.

Risks

A principal sewage outfall (Emissari Cala Crancs) is located 1,300 meters offshore at 30 meters depth, discharging treated effluent from the Vila-seca/Salou wastewater treatment system. The beach is not connected to the main Vila-seca/Salou system but has its own principal outfall.
