Platja de la Pixerota is a semi-enclosed beach located at the northern edge of Mont-roig del Camp municipality in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 1,070 meters long with an average width of 24 meters and covers an area of 1,068 square meters. It is situated in a semi-natural residential setting with a campsite and agricultural fields nearby. The beach has medium occupancy during summer and is bounded by rocks at its northern end, opening to Punta de la Pixerota at its southern end where the Riera de la Pixerota stream empties into the sea.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Sandy beach with coarse sand (mean grain size D50 = 0.75 mm). Water body classification: C30 Cambrils-Mont-roig del Camp (sandy, shallow type with low continental influence). Mean water temperatures: June 21.6°C, July 25.3°C, August 25.8°C, September 24.8°C. Mean salinity range: 28.3–38.5 psu. Significant wave height: 81 cm with mean period 5.24 seconds. Predominant sea state: rippled. Winds: predominantly southeast and weak.

Location

Mont-roig del Camp municipality (12,193 inhabitants) in the Baix Camp comarca, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. Season

First week of June to third week of September. Weekly microbiological monitoring on Saturdays. Minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Monitoring occurs weekly throughout the 17-week bathing season. Environmental inspections assess water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton discoloration, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Additional monitoring parameters include sand condition and beach access status.

Risks

Riera de la Pixerota stream normally does not reach the sea but can discharge into the beach during heavy rainfall. The area has a high Hydrological Response Velocity (VRH) Index, indicating susceptibility to rapid hydrological changes during rain events.
