Platja de la Porquerola is an open beach located in Mont-roig del Camp, a municipality in Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 900 metres long with an average width of 28 metres and covers a surface area of 23,938 square metres. The beach features medium sand with a steep water entry gradient and is situated in a semi-natural environment surrounded by campings. Summer occupancy levels are low.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water mass C30 (Cambrils-Mont-roig del Camp), classified as a sandy shallow water body with low continental influence. Average water temperature ranges from 21.4°C in June to 25.7°C in August. Mean salinity ranges from 36.9 to 38.4 psu. Significant wave height averages 81 centimetres with a mean period of 5.24 seconds. Predominant winds are southwest and weak.

Location

Mont-roig del Camp, Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located on the Mediterranean coast in the Baix Camp region. Mont-roig del Camp has 12,193 inhabitants.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring comprises 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological analysis and a minimum of three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) under Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental inspections occur at least three times weekly during the bathing season, evaluating water transparency, colour, floating human-origin solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Bathing waters are classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE.

Risks

The Barranc de la Porquerola stream usually does not reach the sea but discharges to the beach during heavy rainfall. Several gullies and streams in the southern part of the beach similarly discharge to the sea during heavy precipitation. The area has a high hydrological response velocity index during rainfall episodes.
