Playa de Los Locos is a bathing beach located in Torrevieja, Alicante, in the Valencian Community of Spain. The beach has an irregular closed configuration with perpendicular breakwaters for defence and a rigid seafront promenade. It is bounded to the north by Cala de la Higuera beach and to the south by Cura beach. The beach has a highwater line of 773.3 metres and an average width of 34 metres, with a substrate composition of rock and sand.

Marine coastal water body. The beach has a highwater line of 773.3 metres and an average width of 34 metres. The substrate comprises rock and sand. Water currents flow from south to north. The tidal range is microtidal. The water body is part of the Segura Hydrographic Demarcation and is classified as a coastal water mass with good status.

Location

Located in the municipality of Torrevieja, Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain. Parking is available. The beach is accessible to persons with disabilities.

Facilities

Lifeguards and rescue services are available. Foot showers and foot-washing facilities are provided. Free public toilets and toilets in bars are available. Rubbish bins and selective waste bins are present. Accessible point service is available. Beach bars and chiringuitos are present. Buoys for delimitation are installed. Access roads exist and disabled access is available.

Season

Official bathing season is from 1 June to 15 September.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as good. Annual precipitation in the influence zone is 246 millimetres, with April being the wettest month and July the driest. The water mass is classified as coastal category with typology 6. Monitoring has occurred since 1988. Quality assessments for years 2020–2023 exist but specific results are not detailed in the text.

Risks

Rainfall, urban sewage systems, and coastal discharges all have low frequency and mild impact on water quality. Rivers, canals, industrial installations, port installations, and diffuse pollution all have low frequency and mild impact. No direct coastal discharges exist that could affect water quality. No episodes of cyanobacteria proliferation have been detected on the Valencian coast. Phytoplankton blooms and jellyfish proliferation are natural phenomena that occur more frequently in bathing zones with low water renewal.
