Water Quality

Water quality classification: Sufficient (2012, 2016), Good (2013, 2014, 2015). High risk of non-compliance with Directive 2006/7/CEE due to the cumulative influence of multiple discharge sources within the Santoña Marshes. Multiple continuous urban sewage discharges identified with elevated E. coli concentrations ranging from 10⁶ to 5×10⁷ CFU/100ml. Chlorophyll 'a' concentration approximately 3.1 µg/l at the coastal water station. Phytoplankton density below 5,000,000 cells/l.

Risks

High risk of pollution due to continuous discharge from six sewage systems and one stream. Elevated bacterial contamination from sewage outfalls: EDAR San Pantaleón (1.306 m³/s, 10⁶ CFU/100ml), EDAR Adal-Treto (0.023 m³/s, 10⁶ CFU/100ml), Bárcena de Cicero (0.021 m³/s, 5×10⁷ CFU/100ml), Laredo (0.110 m³/s, 5×10⁷ CFU/100ml), Colindres (0.026 m³/s, 5×10⁷ CFU/100ml), and Arroyo El Bullón (0.027 m³/s, 5×10⁷ CFU/100ml). Pollution values systematically and continuously exceed directive standards.
