Tamariu Beach is a sandy beach in the municipality of Palafrugell in Girona, Catalonia, Spain, located on the Mediterranean coast. The beach is enclosed between rocky outcrops and cliffs to the north and south. It features coarse sand with an average width of 25 meters and a length of 209 meters. The beach has high occupancy during summer months and is situated in a residential setting at the southern edge of the Begur mountains.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach is classified as an enclosed type with very coarse sand (D50 = 1.86 mm). Surface area: 5,362 m². Average width: 25 m. Length: 209 m. Strong slope for water entry. Average water temperature ranges from 20.1°C in June to 23.1°C in August. Significant wave height: 0.87 m with an average period of 5.55 seconds. Salinity range: 31.5–38.4 psu. Water body classification: C14 Begur-Blanes, rocky deep type with low continental influence.

Location

Palafrugell municipality in the Baix Empordà region of Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. Located on the Mediterranean coast with access via the Tamariu stream bed which currently serves as the access road to the beach.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) are analysed weekly. Environmental monitoring includes weekly sampling and visual inspections evaluating water transparency, colouration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is connected to the Palamós wastewater treatment system (EDAR) with biological treatment during summer months (May to September). During winter, wastewater is discharged to sea via the Tamariu emergency outfall with screening treatment.

Risks

The Tamariu stream is the only freshwater watercourse that discharges into the bathing zone during heavy rainfall. The area has a High Hydrological Response Velocity Index (VRH) indicating susceptibility to strong rainfall events. Phytoplankton proliferations can occur naturally during summer, though most form only coloured patches without risk to swimmers.
