Terramar Beach is located in the urban residential municipality of Sitges in Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is a confined sandy beach with an average width of 19 metres and a length of 484 metres, covering a surface area of 10,350 square metres. The beach features fine sand with a very strong water entry slope and is bordered at both ends by T-shaped breakwaters. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to the Rieres de Garraf river basin. Water body classification: shallow sandy type with low continental influence. Average salinity range 37.0–38.5 psu. Average water temperatures: June 21.0°C, July 24.8°C, August 25.6°C, September 24.1°C. Significant wave height 0.74 metres with average period of 6 seconds, most frequent direction SSW. Predominant sea state: calm. Predominant wind: SE, weak.

Location

Sitges, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded to the north by a breakwater at Josep Planas Robert street, separating it from Barra Beach, and to the south by the Punta de les Anquines breakwater.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted for 17 consecutive weeks during this period.

Water Quality

Monitored under the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) Beach and Coastal Water Quality Surveillance Plan according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological testing conducted weekly for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes weekly water sample collection and visual inspection of water parameters: transparency, colour, floating human-origin solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach has no direct freshwater input.

Risks

The beach is subject to monitoring for phytoplankton proliferations. A management and information protocol is in place to alert the public if toxic phytoplankton species are detected.
