Platja de l'Estanyol is a sandy beach located in the urban municipality of Sitges, Barcelona, within the Garraf district. The beach is 365 metres long with an average width of 20 metres and covers an area of 6,945 square metres. It is bounded by breakwaters at both its northern and southern ends and experiences high occupation during summer months. The beach has fine sand sediment and a very steep water entry gradient.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water. The beach forms part of water body C23 (Platja de l'Estanyol), classified as a sandy shallow water body with low continental influence. Salinity range: 37.3–38.5 psu. Water temperature: June 21.0°C, July 24.8°C, August 25.7°C, September 24.3°C. Significant wave height: 0.74 metres with an average period of 6 seconds. Predominant wind direction: southeast, weak intensity. Predominant sea state: rippled. Water circulation follows a cyclonic pattern with currents parallel to the continental coast.

Location

Sitges, Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located within the urban area of Sitges municipality, which has a population of 27,668 inhabitants. It is bounded by the Bassa Rodona beach to the north and the Riera Xica beach to the south.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring includes a minimum of 3 weekly inspections.

Water Quality

The bathing water is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspections of water transparency, colouration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The sewage system Sitges-Sant Pere de Ribes treats 45,334 inhabitants and 108,000 population equivalents with secondary biological treatment, discharging through two submarine emissaries (Les Coves primary and Aiguadolç emergency). The beach has no direct freshwater inputs during rain events.

Risks

The area is subject to monitoring for phytoplankton proliferation, which is a natural phenomenon that can occur frequently during summer months. In most cases, these blooms only form coloured patches in the water and pose no risk to swimmers. Toxic species detection triggers management and public information protocols.
