Torre Valentina is a semi-sheltered beach in the municipality of Calonge in Girona, Catalonia, located in the southernmost section of Palamós Bay. The beach has a mean width of 46 metres, a length of 637 metres, and a surface area of 28,907 square metres. It is situated in an urban and residential setting with a steep water entry gradient. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach belongs to water body C14 (Begur-Blanes), classified as deep rocky type with low continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 36.4 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.5°C, July 23.5°C, August 23.8°C, September 22.3°C. The beach is composed of very coarse sand with a mean grain size of 1.06 mm. Significant wave height averages 0.87 metres with mean period of 5.55 seconds. Predominant wind is weak southerly direction.

Location

Calonge, Girona, Catalonia, Spain. Located in Baix Empordà comarca. The beach borders Sant Antoni beach to the northeast and Torre Valentina hill to the southwest, with the Riera de Calonge stream discharging at its northeast end.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks during this period, with weekly microbiological sampling and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental inspections occur at minimum three times weekly, assessing water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is served by the Palamós wastewater treatment system with biological treatment and a primary submarine outfall at Castell beach (1,030 metres long, 30 metres deep). Wastewater treatment serves 206,250 population equivalents.

Risks

The Riera de Calonge provides permanent water input to the bathing area but typically does not reach the sea, instead accumulating in the rear part of the beach. Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored during the bathing season; such blooms are natural phenomena and most form coloured patches without posing risk to swimmers, though toxic species trigger preventive protocols.
