Sant Antoni beach is a semi-sheltered beach in Calonge municipality within Palamós bay, protected by three parallel breakwaters and two perpendicular ones. The beach is 1,700 metres long with an average width of 35 metres and a surface area of 51,518 square metres. It experiences high occupancy during summer months and is situated in a fully urban environment.

Water entry slope: steep. Coastal line evolution: -1.38 metres per year. Water body mass C14 (Begur-Blanes) is a deep rocky type with low continental influence. Average salinity: 36.8–38.4 psu. Mean water temperature: June 20.7°C, July 23.9°C, August 24.2°C, September 22.6°C. Significant wave height: 0.87 metres, mean period: 5.55 seconds, predominant direction: NNE. Predominant wind direction: south, weak intensity. Predominant sea state: rippled.

Location

Calonge municipality, Girona province, Baix Empordà comarca, Catalunya, Spain. The beach is bordered by Monestrí beach to the northeast and Torre Valentina beach to the southwest within Palamós bay.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring occurs weekly on Saturdays during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental inspection occurs minimum 3 times per week.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control measures Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci weekly. Environmental control inspects water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Additional analytical controls are performed during quality incidents or short-term events to verify water quality restoration.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme detects and controls microscopic algae species that may pose health risks to swimmers and affect marine ecosystems. Riera de Monells and rec d'en Basses are natural watercourses channelled to rec Madral that discharge into the bathing zone during rainfall.
