Playa de Torrelamata is a maritime bathing zone located in Torrevieja, Alicante, in the Valencian Community, Spain. The beach has a longitudinal open configuration with a rigid wooden promenade and no defensive structures. It is bordered to the north by Playa de Ortigues-Campo and to the south by Playa de Cabo Cervera. The beach extends 2,435.4 meters along the shoreline with an average width of 42.3 meters, and is composed of rocks and sand on a low-lying accumulation coast.

Water

Maritime bathing zone in the Segura Hydrographic Demarcation. The water body is classified as coastal (CW Costera). Microtidal regime with currents flowing from south to north. The coastal water mass has moderate status. Annual precipitation in the influence zone is 246 mm, with the wettest month being April and the driest being July.

Location

Torrevieja, Alicante province, Valencian Community, Spain. The beach is located at Avenue of the Europeans (Avenida de los Europeos). Parking is available. The beach is accessible and has accessible facilities for persons with disabilities.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified as Excellent for the monitoring period 2020–2023 at the sampling point Avenida de los Europeos. Water quality management is regulated by Royal Decree 1341/2007, transposing Directive 2006/7/CE. Weekly visual inspections are conducted during the bathing season assessing water analysis, water appearance, and sand cleanliness. The EDAR Torrevieja wastewater treatment plant serves a population of 112,453 inhabitants with a design flow of 60,000 m³/day and achieves 99% removal of suspended solids and BOD₅. Treatment includes tertiary treatment plus ultraviolet disinfection.

Risks

Low-frequency potential contamination risks identified: rainfall (low frequency, slight impact), urban sanitation (low frequency, slight impact), direct coastal discharges (low frequency, slight impact), rivers/channels (low frequency, slight impact), industrial facilities (low frequency, slight impact), port installations (low frequency, slight impact), and diffuse pollution (low frequency, slight impact). The Acequión del Arroyo de La Mata discharge from the salt production facility at the northern boundary presents low risk with sporadic frequency. Phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that can occur in low-renewal zones; cyanobacteria have not been detected in the Valencian coast. Jellyfish blooms are a natural phenomenon associated with coastal geomorphology, climate conditions, and high water temperatures.
