Platja del Canadell is a sheltered beach located in the urban area of Calella de Palafrugell in the Baix Empordà comarca. The beach is 225 metres long with an average width of 26 metres and covers an area of 2,446 square metres. It features very coarse sand and has a strong slope at the water entry. The beach borders rocky outcrops to the north and Platja de Port Bo to the south, and experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea, classified as water body C14 (Begur-Blanes), a rocky deep-water mass with low continental influence. Average water temperature: June 20.3°C, July 23.1°C, August 23.5°C, September 21.7°C. Salinity range: 36.9–38.4 psu. Predominant sea state: calm. Significant wave height: 0.87 metres with average period of 5.55 seconds, most frequent direction NNE. Weak easterly winds predominate. A channelled stream is the only freshwater course that occasionally discharges into the bathing area during heavy rainfall.

Location

Facilities

Inspection and monitoring carried out by qualified technical personnel. Lifeguard services and beach amenities available as per municipal information.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring is weekly (every Saturday) for 17 consecutive weeks during this period. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control focuses on Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspection includes assessment of water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The bathing zone belongs to the Palamós wastewater treatment system, which provides biological treatment with a maximum flow of 33,000 cubic metres per day. The principal effluent discharge (Castell emissary) is located at Palamós beach. The coastal section of Tamariu in Palafrugell connects to the Palamós system during summer months (May–September); in winter, water is discharged through the Tamariu emergency emissary.

Risks

A channelled stream occasionally discharges freshwater during heavy rainfall. Phytoplankton proliferations can occur naturally and are monitored during the bathing season; most form coloured patches with no risk to swimmers, though protocols exist for potentially toxic species.
