Platja del Golfet is a small cove beach located in Palafrugell, Girona, situated within the rocky stretch of coast where the Castell-Cap Roig Protected Natural Area begins. The beach is nestled between rock formations and cliffs, with a surface area of 1,277 square meters and an average width of 17 meters. It has high summer occupancy and features very coarse sand with a steep water entry slope. The beach is in a semi-natural and residential setting.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water body type C14 (Begur-Blanes): deep rocky type with low continental influence. Salinity range 36.8–38.6 psu. Average water temperature: June 20.2°C, July 23.0°C, August 23.2°C, September 21.6°C. Significant wave height 0.87 m with average period 5.55 seconds. Most frequent wave direction NNE. Predominant wind direction E with weak intensity. Predominant sea state: rippled.

Location

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control conducted weekly on Saturdays throughout the 17-week monitoring season.

Water Quality

Water quality monitored weekly during the 17-week swimming season according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) analysed weekly. Environmental inspections conducted minimum 3 times weekly assessing transparency, colour, human waste solids, marine and terrestrial plant debris, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach does not receive any permanent or temporary watercourse discharge, only surface runoff during rainfall.

Risks

The beach is situated in a coastal zone with high hydrological response velocity (VRH) index. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in place to detect potentially toxic algae species that may appear during summer months.
