Platja del Cau del Llop is a cove beach located in the municipality of Llançà in Alt Empordà, Girona, in a residential setting. The beach is narrow and well-protected, situated within a rocky coastal stretch dotted with coves, with rocky outcrops to the north and south. It is a somewhat enclosed and sheltered beach in the Mediterranean Sea.

Water

Mediterranean Sea cove beach. Average width 25 m, length 140 m, surface area 3,300 m². Very steep water entry. Belongs to water mass C1 (Portbou-Llançà), a deep rocky type with moderate continental influence. Average salinity 35.8–38.5 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.2°C, July 22.5°C, August 22.0°C, September 20.6°C. Predominant sea state is flat with significant wave height 0.61 m and mean period 5.82 seconds from the north. Moderate continental influence index.

Location

Llançà municipality (5,082 inhabitants) in Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located in a residential area along the Mediterranean coast.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly (Saturdays) over 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental inspections occur at least 3 times weekly during the bathing season. The beach receives no permanent or seasonal natural watercourse inflow, though surface runoff from the area may discharge through small channels during heavy rainfall.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted during the bathing season to detect potentially toxic algal blooms, though these are natural phenomena and usually pose no risk to swimmers. Management protocols are in place for toxic species detection.
