Playa del Masnou is a sandy beach located in the municipality of El Masnou in the Maresme region of Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 1,100 meters long with an average width of 30 meters and a surface area of 17,557 square meters. It is situated in a semi-urban coastal environment within an urban municipality of 22,288 inhabitants. The beach has medium occupation during summer and is bordered to the north by the Port of El Masnou and opens toward Montgat Beach to the south.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water body. Salinity range 36.7–38.3 psu. Water temperature: June 21.4°C, July 23.9°C, August 24.1°C, September 23.7°C. Moderate continental influence. Significant wave height 0.74 m with average period of 6 seconds. Mean sand grain size (D50) 0.32 mm. Very steep water entry gradient. Coastline evolution of -7 m per year. Belongs to water mass C17 (Mataró-Montgat) characterized as shallow sandy with moderate continental influence.

Location

El Masnou municipality in the Maresme region of Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is part of the municipality coastline within the Mediterranean Sea.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs over 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays and a minimum of 3 weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly according to European Directive 2006/7/CE criteria. Microbiological monitoring measures Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections evaluate transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

Riera d'Alella and Torrent del Valldrera are the main freshwater sources that discharge into the bathing zone during rainfall conditions. The area has high hydrological response velocity (VRH index) to rainfall. Potential for phytoplankton proliferations, which are monitored during the bathing season. An emergency outfall from the Teià-Maresme wastewater treatment system is located at Ocata Beach.
