Platja de les Roques is a semi-urban beach located in Montgat, Barcelona, in the Maresme comarca of Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 218 metres long with an average width of 40 metres and a surface area of 8,720 square metres. It is bounded to the north-east by a rocky outcrop separating it from Platja de Monsolís and to the south-east by a breakwater. The beach has a high occupation rate during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach belongs to water body C18 (Montgat-Badalona), classified as a sandy shallow water body with low continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 36.9 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures in summer months: June 21.5°C, July 23.9°C, August 24.0°C, September 23.7°C. Significant wave height is 0.74 metres with a mean period of 6 seconds. The beach has a very steep water entry and experiences coastal erosion at a rate of 3.8 metres per year.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) from June to September according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring is conducted fortnightly at an official sampling point, with analysis of microbiological quality through faecal contamination indicators: Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci. Temporal classifications are expressed as Excellent, Good (suitable for bathing), or Insufficient (unsuitable for bathing). Annual classifications are based on four years of analytical data and include categories: Excellent, Good, Sufficient, and Insufficient.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring has been conducted since 2000. Heavy rainfall episodes may temporarily affect water quality. The sewage system (Besòs system) has an emergency outfall located 200 metres south of the principal outfall that can be activated during heavy rainfall events.
