Platja del Parc de Garbí is a beach located in Sant Carles de la Ràpita, a municipality in Tarragona, Catalonia, in a fully urban setting. The beach is 500 metres long with an average width of 45 metres and is composed of fine sand. It is bounded by breakwaters on both sides and has a high occupancy rate during summer. The beach has a moderate water entry gradient and experiences coastal erosion at a rate of 0.5 metres per year.

Water

Mediterranean Sea, specifically the T3 Badia dels Alfacs water body, which is a bay with high continental influence. Surface area: 20,580 square metres. Average salinity: 25.3–37 psu. Low hydrological response velocity index. No permanent or intermittent watercourses discharge directly onto the beach.

Location

Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Tarragona Province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located within the municipality, bordered by breakwaters and in proximity to Sant Carles port on its left side. Barranc dels Penjats arrives at the beach's left end.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring: weekly. Environmental monitoring: minimum 3 inspections weekly over 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored weekly are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental monitoring includes weekly water sampling and visual inspection, with assessment of transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation residues, foam, phytoplankton discolouration, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Wastewater from Sant Carles de la Ràpita (20,050 inhabitants, 28,921 population equivalents) is treated at the biological treatment plant with nitrogen removal and tertiary treatment, with direct discharge to coastal waters.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in place since 2000. Some toxic phytoplankton species may occur naturally during summer; detection triggers management and information protocols. Macroseaweed communities monitored for ecological status.
