Platja del Port de la Selva is a sandy beach located in the municipality of El Port de la Selva in Alt Empordà, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 522 metres long with an average width of 30 metres and covers an area of 13,130 square metres. It is sheltered by the bay in which it is located and situated in an urban environment near the port. The beach experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach is part of water body C2 (Portbou-Llançà), classified as a deep rocky type with moderate continental influence. Average water temperature ranges from 20.3°C in June to 22.3°C in July and 21.9°C in August. Salinity range is 35.3–38.5 psu. Significant wave height averages 0.61 metres with a mean period of 5.82 seconds. Coastal circulation is cyclonic with parallel currents along the continental coast and currents towards the northeast. Predominant wind direction is N (weak). Predominant sea state is calm. Sediment composition is medium sand with a mean grain size (D50) of 0.73 mm. The beach has a gentle water entry slope.

El Port de la Selva, Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 1,029 inhabitants.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental control is conducted for 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) in accordance with EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring is conducted weekly (every Saturday) during the bathing season, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly, assessing water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Additional analytical controls are performed when necessary to verify restoration of water quality.

Risks

The beach receives occasional water discharge from the Riera de la Selva, which flows into the left end of the bathing zone. The Riera de Romanyac discharges to the sea during heavy rainfall and permanently accumulates water in a pond approximately 50 metres from the shoreline. The treated effluent from the wastewater treatment plant is discharged either to the Riera de Romanyac (October to May) or directly to sea via the main submarine outfall located approximately 300 metres from the coastline (June to September). A phytoplankton monitoring programme has been in place since 2000 to detect and control harmful algal blooms.
