Platja del Pas is a small beach located at the edge of the urban centre of El Port de la Selva in Girona, Catalonia. The beach is boxed in by rocky areas to the north and south, with an average width of 15 metres and a length of 51 metres. Summer occupancy of the beach is high. The beach is situated in a semi-urban setting very close to the harbour breakwater.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Water mass type: C3 Cap de Creus, rocky deep-water type with low continental influence. Average salinity 35.7–38.6 psu. Water temperature: June 19.9°C, July 22.0°C, August 21.4°C, September 20.0°C. Significant wave height 0.61 metres, average period 5.82 seconds, most frequent direction north. Predominant sea state: rippled. Weak northerly winds predominant. Low river influence, no natural watercourse discharge.

Location

El Port de la Selva, Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located at the extreme edge of the urban nucleus, very near the harbour breakwater.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted weekly on Saturdays. Environmental inspection minimum three times weekly during this 17-week period.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored under EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental parameters monitored include water transparency, coloration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton discolouration, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach receives treated wastewater effluent from the Port de la Selva wastewater treatment plant (biological treatment with nitrogen removal at approximately 70%), discharged via submarine emissary or through the Romanyac stream depending on season.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in place. Harmful algal blooms are monitored during the bathing season across the Catalan coast. Management and information protocols exist for detection of toxic species.
