Platja del Prat is a semi-urban beach located in El Prat de Llobregat municipality in Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 4,775 metres long with an average width of 77 metres and a total area of 37,416 square metres. It features medium-grain sand with a steep water entry gradient and is oriented towards the south-southeast. The beach has low occupancy levels during summer and is situated near the Llobregat River estuary and Barcelona Airport.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal beach in the Llobregat delta. Average water temperature ranges from 21.0°C in June to 25.5°C in August, with mean salinity of 36.5–38.6 psu. Predominant sea state is rippled with significant wave height of 0.74 metres and mean period of 6 seconds. Coastal area has high hydrological response index.

Location

El Prat de Llobregat municipality, Barcelona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bounded to the south-west by the Remolar lagoon and to the north-east by the Ricarda lagoon. Additional information and facilities are available on the municipality's website.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental monitoring conducted minimum three times weekly.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored and classified according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored weekly include Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections conducted minimum three times weekly assess water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, and hydrocarbons.

Risks

The area is influenced by several freshwater inputs including the Llobregat River, Bunyola canal, and natural lagoons (Ricarda, Illa, Roberta, and Remolar) which can discharge into the bathing area during heavy rainfall. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme is in place. Wastewater treatment system with submarine outfall located 3,200 metres offshore.
