El Palmeral is a natural Mediterranean coastal bathing water located in Almería, Spain. The beach is 540 metres long with an average width of 40 metres and composed of dark sand. It features calm bathing conditions and is moderately exposed to waves dominated by easterly winds. The beach is highly occupied and fully urbanised with a seafront promenade.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water. The water body is classified as natural Mediterranean coastal water influenced by Atlantic waters. Bathymetry shows deep waters with a muddy-sand substrate. Tidal range is microtidal (0–2 metres). Current regime is dominantly towards the east, east-southeast, and east-northeast. Annual precipitation in the area ranges from 200–400 millimetres with a torrential index of 50–75 percent.

Location

Almería municipality in Andalucía, Spain. The beach is easily accessible on foot or by car. A sports port is located 2.5 kilometres away at Almería.

Facilities

Red Cross post, rescue equipment, surveillance equipment, signage including danger warnings, disabled access, toilets, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, nautical rental service. No marina club or diving zone.

Water Quality

Classified as Excellent for all monitoring seasons from 2013 to 2016. Short-term contamination risk is low and microbiological in nature with a 24-hour duration. Risk assessment was conducted using deterministic methodology according to standard UNE 150008.

Risks

Low risk from jellyfish blooms, phytoplankton proliferation, and macroalgae. Diffuse contamination sources include land use in the influence zone and altered built-up surfaces.
