Playa El Portús is a natural sandy beach located in Cartagena on the Mediterranean coast. The beach is 350 meters long with an average width of 15 meters and a golden sand bottom composed of boulders, gravel, and sand. It experiences a high degree of occupancy with approximately 2,275 maximum bathers and is used daily for recreational purposes. The water renewal rate is less than 7 days.

Water Quality

Water quality was rated as excellent for the period 2000-2011. The beach is part of the 'La Podadera-Cabo Tiñoso' coastal water mass, which has good ecological status. No significant pollution pressure exists. Toxic phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that rarely affects public health; sampling in 2008 and 2009 showed practically no presence of potentially toxic cells.

Risks

Toxic phytoplankton proliferation risk: null or very low. Short-duration episodes are unlikely. Jellyfish appear seasonally with maximum abundance from early spring to late summer. Production levels are highly variable.
