Playa Famara is a 2,800-meter-long coastal beach in Teguise, Lanzarote, featuring golden sand and boulders. The beach is exposed to strong wave action with a regime of strong waves and is subject to a tidal range of 1-3 meters. It is designated for swimming activities including surfing during the official bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on evaluation of microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) collected over four years in accordance with RD 1341/2007. The coastal surface water body ES70LZTI1 is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical) with an overall good or better state according to the Lanzarote Water Plan (BOC no. 252 of 31 December 2018).

Risks

One identified point source: EDAR Caleta de Famara (wastewater treatment plant). Potential short-duration pollution from rainwater runoff and storm water discharge carrying contaminants from upstream (sporadic, less than 72 hours expected duration). Potential raw or treated urban wastewater from pipe ruptures, sewerage network failures, overflows, or emergency situations (unforeseen, less than 72 hours expected duration). Episodes of cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
