Coastal water body in the Western Cantabrian hydrographic district. Length 820 metres, width 90 metres (highly variable). Dark sand composition. Water body mass: Costa Oeste (160007). Macrotidal range (>4 metres). Mean wind speed 5.24 m/s. Current direction northwest. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Strong wave action.

Located in Frejulfe, municipality of Navia, Asturias, Spain. Good pedestrian access and road access with 50–100 parking spaces available.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent at sampling point PM1 over the last two years. Sampling point PM2, located at the river mouth, shows high concentrations of enteric bacteria and was classified as insufficient in 2012 and 2014. Moderate contamination risk identified due to influence of the Frejulfe River.

Risks

Frejulfe River discharges, agricultural runoff and seepage from adjacent land. Diffuse contamination source at river mouth causing short-duration contamination episodes with high enteric bacteria concentrations. Frequency weekly, duration less than 8 hours. Moderate risk classification. Risk of jellyfish proliferation considered null. Risk of microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation considered null. Risk of macroalgae proliferation considered low.
