Platja Gran de Cadaqués is a sheltered urban beach located in the centre of Cadaqués municipality in Alt Empordà, Girona. The beach is situated within a bay that provides protection from the open sea and has a high occupancy rate during summer months. It is flanked by numerous moored boats and surrounded by urban development.

Water

Mediterranean Sea, rocky deep-water bay (Badia de Cadaqués) with moderate continental influence. Average beach width 16 m, length 207 m, surface area 3,022 m². Medium sand sediment (D50 = 0.26 mm). Very steep water entry. Coastline evolution -0.22 m/year. Salinity range 36.2–38.5 psu. Water temperature: June 20.3°C, July 22.6°C, August 22.3°C, September 20.8°C. Predominant sea state flat with average significant wave height 0.61 m and mean period 5.82 seconds. High hydrological response velocity index.

Location

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control conducted weekly during 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental control minimum 3 weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality monitored weekly according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control analyzes Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental control includes visual inspection of water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Additional monitoring for phytoplankton proliferations and coastal water quality. Wastewater treatment: biological treatment at EDAR Cadaqués serving 20,000 equivalent inhabitants, with primary effluent discharge to sea via main submarine outfall at Platja Gran (1,350 m long, 35 m depth).

Risks

Occasional discharge from sa Rierassa watercourse during heavy rainfall. Four emergency outfalls and discharge pipes at Portlligat, s'Arenella, ses Oliveres, and Llané beaches for potential sewage network overload or main outfall failure. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in place. Potential presence of floating debris, marine vegetation, foam, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish.
