La Calzada is a bathing beach in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, in the transition waters of the Guadalquivir estuary. The beach is 2,340 metres long with an average width of 60 metres, composed of golden sand in shallow waters with calm bathing conditions. The area is highly urbanised with a maritime promenade and is exposed to low microbiological contamination risk over short periods.

Water

Transition water in the Guadalquivir estuary mouth (Bonanza water body). Shallow waters with sandy substrate. Mesomareal range of 2–4 metres. Currents flow dominantly towards south, south-southeast and southeast. Waves come dominantly from the west and occasionally from the southeast.

Location

Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz province, Andalucía. Access is on foot. The beach has a maritime promenade with accessible pathways.

Facilities

Red Cross station, rescue equipment, lifeguard surveillance, danger signalisation, toilets, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, disabled access, water sports rental, nautical club, scuba diving zone, sports port at Puerto Deportivo de Chipiona.

1 June to 30 September

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Sufficient (2013), Good (2014), Excellent (2015 and 2016). Microbiological contamination risk is low with short duration (24 hours). The Sanlúcar wastewater treatment plant and diffuse sources from land use in the influence zone are identified pollution sources. The Guadalquivir River and two tributaries contribute to the water body.

Risks

Low risk of jellyfish blooms, phytoplankton proliferation, and macroalgae proliferation.
