La Jara is a natural coastal bathing beach in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, influenced by Guadalquivir River discharges into the Atlantic Ocean. The 2,560-metre-long beach with an average width of 40 metres features golden sand and calm bathing conditions. It experiences moderate wave exposure with currents predominantly directed south and southeast.

Water

Coastal Atlantic waters influenced by river inputs, part of the Guadalquivir estuary plume. Shallow waters with sandy substrate. Mesomareal tidal range of 2–4 metres. Dominant current direction towards south, south-southeast, and southeast. Moderately exposed to wave action with dominant westerly waves.

Location

Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Cádiz, Andalucía, Spain. Access is on foot. Medium occupation level with semi-urban development.

Facilities

Red Cross post, lifeguards, rescue equipment, surveillance equipment, toilets, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, signage, walkways. No disabled access. No beach hut rental or water sports facilities.

Season

1 June to 30 September.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Sufficient (2013), Good (2014), Excellent (2015–2016). Moderate short-duration microbiological pollution risk identified with a 24-hour duration window. Diffuse pollution sources include land use, constructed and altered surfaces, and agricultural areas in the influence zone. River Guadalquivir and two tributaries are identified as contributors.

Risks

Moderate short-duration microbiological contamination risk from river discharge. Low risk of jellyfish, phytoplankton proliferation, and macroalgae.
