Playa La Griega is a 820-metre-long natural sandy beach located in the municipality of Colunga in Asturias, Spain. The beach has golden sand and is subject to macrotidal conditions with wave heights of medium to strong intensity. Water renewal occurs in less than seven days. The beach received the Blue Flag designation in 2011 and has been classified as good quality for bathing in recent years.

Water

Coastal water body, 820 metres long and 82 metres wide (highly variable). Golden sand composition. Part of the East Coast water body (160007). Macrotidal regime with amplitude greater than 4 metres. Mean wind speed 5.24 m/s. Current direction west-northwest. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Strong wave conditions.

Location

Located near the town of Lastres in the locality of San Telmo, Colunga municipality, Asturias. Accessible by road with over 100 parking spaces. Good pedestrian access.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as good for bathing. Microbiological monitoring at sampling point PM1 shows good sanitary quality. Primary contamination source is the Lliberdón River, which can carry organic matter, enteric bacteria, and drainage from adjacent agricultural and residential areas. Overall contamination risk is low.

Risks

Lliberdón River is the main contamination source, potentially introducing sewage leaks, discharges, and runoff from adjacent agricultural and residential properties. Short-duration contamination episodes occur with biennial frequency and duration under 8 hours. Jellyfish appearances occur during spring-summer months but with low frequency and density; Portuguese man o'war (Physalia physalis) sightings are mostly isolated. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low due to sandy substrate and coastal orientation. Microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation risk is negligible.
