Playa La Lajita is a coastal bathing beach located in Pájara municipality on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 463 metres long and 20 metres wide, featuring dark coarse sand and boulders as substrate. The water is characterised by calm conditions with protected wave exposure and tidal ranges of 1–3 metres. The bathing area is situated in a naturally good ecological state according to the Water Framework Directive.

Water

Coastal marine water body. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to −10 metres depth. Wave regime is calm with protected wave exposure. Tidal range is 1–3 metres. Substrate consists of dark coarse sand and boulders. The water mass is naturally coastal surface water classified as ES70FVTII – Punta Entallada – Punta de Jandía.

The beach is located in Pájara municipality on Fuerteventura island, Canary Islands, Spain. The nearest locality is Costa Calma. Pedestrian and vehicular access are both available and in good condition. Parking is available and in good condition. Disabled access is available but in regular condition.

The beach does not have lifeguards, showers, foot washing facilities, public restrooms, changing rooms, bars, public water fountain, consumable water supply, telephones, public address system, or umbrellas, awnings, or lounger rentals.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on microbiological indicators including Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci evaluated over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The water body is in good ecological state (biological and physico-chemical) with an overall 'good or better' status. No previous contamination episodes are recorded in the monitoring database.

Risks

Potential contamination sources include the La Lajita wastewater treatment plant (EDAR) and the Barranco Tarajal de Sancho watercourse. Short-duration contamination episodes may occur from stormwater runoff generated by heavy rainfall and raw or treated urban wastewater from sewer network failures, emergencies, or unauthorised discharges, with a duration of less than 72 hours and sporadic to unforeseen frequency. Phytoplankton proliferation episodes of the cyanobacterium Trichodesmium occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. Jellyfish, sea urchins, and macroalgae pose no risk.
