Playa Tarajalejo is a coastal bathing beach located in Tuineje municipality on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach stretches 1,182 metres in length with an average width of 28 metres and features dark sand, boulders, and gravel substrate. The water is characterised by protected exposure to wave action and calm waters with tidal ranges of 1–3 metres. The official swimming season runs from 1 February to 30 November.

Location

Playa Tarajalejo is situated in the municipality of Tuineje on the island of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands. The beach has good vehicle access and regular pedestrian access, with a seafront promenade and good parking facilities available.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Public water distribution source available, though water is not potable. Showers, foot-washing stations, toilets, and changing rooms available. Bars on site. Waste bins and containers provided. Telephone public service not available. Public address system not available. Umbrella rental available. Sunbed rental available. Canoe/kayak rental available. Regular disabled access. Services include motor boats, bodyboarding, kayaking, scuba diving, surfing (water activities) and football and volleyball (beach activities).

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year monitoring of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to Spanish Royal Decree 1341/2007. The surface coastal water body ES70FVTII (Punta Entallada–Punta de Jandía) is in good ecological status with good or better overall state. No previous contamination episodes are recorded.

Risks

Potential contamination sources include: sewage treatment plant discharge conduits and the Tarajalejo wastewater treatment plant; runoff from Tarajalejo and Cruzela ravines. Short-duration pollution events expected: sporadic stormwater discharge from heavy rainfall carrying contaminants; occasional raw or treated urban wastewater from pipeline ruptures, sewage network failures, overflow events or unauthorised discharges (frequency: unpredictable, duration: less than 72 hours); brine discharge from desalination plant rejection (frequency: unpredictable, duration: less than 72 hours). Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes of Trichodesmium recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
