Las Palmeras is a 178-metre urban beach in Vélez-Málaga, Málaga, located on the Mediterranean coast of Andalucía. The beach has a mean width of 40 metres with dark sand composition and moderate wave conditions. It experiences high occupancy and is fully urbanized with a seafront promenade. The beach is naturally influenced by Atlantic waters and experiences micromareal tidal ranges of 0–2 metres.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water. Deep water with muddy sand substrate. Micromareal tidal range of 0–2 metres. Dominant currents flow northeast. Moderately exposed to wave action, with dominant waves from the east and east-southeast associated with levante winds.

Location

Vélez-Málaga municipality, Málaga province, Andalucía. Access is available on foot and by car. The nearest sports port is Caleta de Vélez.

Rescue equipment available. Toilets, showers, and waste bins present. Disabled access available. Signage provided. Seafront promenade and walkways available. Nautical equipment rental and sailing club available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent for all monitoring seasons (2016–2019). Microbiological contamination risk is low and short-duration (24 hours). Main pollution source is the treated wastewater treatment plant at Algarrobo (MA410). Medusa risk is medium; phytoplankton and macroalgae risks are low.

Risks

Treated urban wastewater from the Algarrobo treatment plant discharges to the area. Arroyos de los Domínguez watercourse influences the zone. Medium risk of jellyfish. Land use impacts and altered surfaces in the influence zone.
