Los Escullos is a 385-metre bathing beach located in the Cabo de Gata area of Almería, Spain. The beach has a sandy composition with golden sand and a mean width of 40 metres. It is situated in an isolated, undeveloped location within a protected natural area (LIC/ZEPA/Natural Park). The beach experiences calm swimming conditions with low occupancy levels.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water body, deep rocky substrate with gravel and rocks. Micromareal range (0–2 metres). Dominant currents flow eastward, east-southeast, and east-northeast. Wave regime dominated by easterly and east-northeast winds (levante wind). Exposed to wave action.

Location

Níjar municipality, Almería province, Andalucía, Spain. The beach is accessible on foot easily and by car. The nearest sports port is San José, 10 kilometres away.

Facilities

Signage present. Cleaning service available. Rubbish bins provided. Surveillance equipment installed. No lifeguard post. No rescue equipment. No disabled access. No toilets. No showers. No boardwalks.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent for all monitoring seasons 2013–2016. Short-term contamination risk is low and microbiological in nature (24-hour duration). Risk sources include diffuse land use and natural/forest surfaces in the influence zone. Proliferation risks are low for jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae.

Risks

Short-term microbiological contamination risk from ramblas (Rambla de Majada Redonda and Rambla) during runoff events. Low risk of jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae proliferation.
